Waiting

New Year gift for Ann was a hard one. I really wanted to get something that she liked and useful for her. I came up with something like bags, shoes, clothes and fashion stuffs but I didn't think it's gonna be good for her, especially, for new year. Finally, I got an idea that it should not a product but service. Therefore, I got her a spa session. We got an appointment on Monday and I sent her in to her room at the spa on the appointment day. It was gonna be her great hours for her but I needed to killed my time. Luckily, right on the corner from the spa, there's a nice coffee/ bar for me to wait for her. They sell coffee in the morning and they are a bar at night. The decor is great and they have a nice selection of music. I got a pressed coffee and I did some NYC direction drawing then I got a text from her that she was dome. Time flied so fast. It was about time for dinner. We went to a no name chinese restaurant because she was craving for duck. Right when I got in there was an old lady sitting there with a cup of tea on the table. She was waiting...............

My first day of 2011, I spent my morning at the temple and I chose to do something fun at night by going to Union Hall in park slope with my friend, Mark. One night during Falls, he took me there when we checked out the neighborhood and I just fell in love with the place. They have a library section in the front, two indoor bocce courts, garden seating and concert venue downstairs. It was amazing especially 2 firesides in the winters. That night, It was very roomy and not to crowded. I had the same image for tonight because I was thinking about spending my time at the library section with my Wa-Bi-Sa-Bi book and doing some drawing. However, It was packed when I got there. I forgot that it was New Year on Saturday night and on the top of that they were having a bocce tournament going on and Karaoke in the basement. I was fine to go with the flow. I had learnt the bocce rules that night while I was waiting for Mark to catch up with me. We spent a good hour talking at the firesides and decided to check the Kareoke out. It's not a regular open mic Kareoke but it's hosted by Kareoke Killed Cats. The host/dj was great. He is an entertainer and the crowds were amazing. People were having a good time and grooving with the melodies. It was a great New Year day for me: started clean and ended with fun.

A man

It was a night before New Year's eve. I spent time with a good friend in our favorite neighborhood, East village. We were looking for a place to sit and have a conversation. Something got my attention on the way to the bar. It was a bare light bulb from a small light stand, a silhouette of a man and picture frames on the wall. I peeked through the window of the door. The space is almost empty except a man playing chess and another young man with books. It's almost like a library but very cozy. There are about 20-30 pieces of art work from Sir Shadow on the wall. I decided to take a tour inside to find out what this place really about. The young man looked at me with a welcome face after I walked in. The light which got my attention was from the mam who was plying chess. It seems to me that he was trying to master the game. He didn't really make any move on the board but looked and analyzed. He was back and forth between the board and, i suppose, a  chess book. He was totally a juxtaposition with pictures on the wall. It's Sir Shadow's drawing style. He draws human figure with action by using only one continuous line. It was the same with the man. I saw only his shadow with an outline of highlight from the light stand on his table.  We sat down at a table next to a prepaid Internet service computer. It was about 3 tables away from the man. No conversation between us. We observed the place: tiles on the floor, fans on the ceiling, clock on the wall, the service counter and two men. Our interaction is not by speaking but looking to each other. We agreed that this space is like s twilight zone. It's in the middle of the block and next to trendy restaurants, bars and boutiques. The world outside is in a fast pace with party animals were on the sidewalk in a hunt of fluids and flesh but the clock on the was not even move. Eventually, we found out that this is a hostel, Bowery's whitehouse hotel. It's $33 a night and I think I might come back to check the room out.
